How to choose and register a domain name for your website

What is a domain name?

Before I discuss how to choose a domain name for your website,  I would like to talk a little bit about what a domain name is.  This is something that anyone who wishes dot comto have a website should know. To make things simpler I’ll  use an analogy to help you understand what it is. Think of the house or place that you reside at.  This is your domain or the place where you live.  Same thing with a domain name.  It serves as the “house” where your website “lives”. This is what it would look like: The location of the word example in this example is where the name would be located. That isn’t so difficult is it?

Choosing a name

This part is one if not the most crucial area to building your own website, so it is important to understand  that the name you choose should describe and help to define what your website is all about. This is  kind of a tricky situation because there are so many websites out there probably selling what you are gonna sell. Know also that in order to drive traffic to your website it needs to be noticeable to search engines. Obviously this will require quite a bit of serious thought because once you decide and then set up your choice of names you cannot change it. Research is necessary. Here are some things to consider when deciding which name to choose:

  1. What am I trying to sell?
  2. It needs to be short, sweet and to the point
  3. Try to avoid trends when naming. You want something that will last
  4. Try to use keywords in the name
  5. Try to brand it to your own personal business or experience  (maybe use your name in it.

Something to be aware of…..

There is a lot going on behind the scenes with google and other search engines, and the idea here is to attract their attention in order to get high rankings. The reason we want high rankings is because your site becomes highly visible in this manner. That is where keywords enter the equation. Think about this: When a search is executed you will see the results of the first page and usually there are many more behind it. How many times have you gone past the first page when executing a search? Do you see the point?

I’ve chosen the name now what?

Now that a choice has been made it has to be obtained. You can’t just pick a name and that’s it. The domain name has to be registered. How is this accomplished?  Excellent question,  so glad you asked.  There are a number of companies that are certified domain registrars.  Here are just a few that I have found to be particularly useful and reasonable. Just remember that when you register it is best to start with a year.

That’s just off the top of my head.  I know there are many more out there. Some of them also offer hosting plans to go with the domain and other such bundle type deals.  I  always recommend research before buying into anything. I know  I always do. I want to get the best deal for my buck.

How to register.

So once you’ve chosen your where to register your domain, This is the process: There will be a bar where you enter the name you have chosen. Once you’ve done this there will be a search conducted in order to determine if the name is already in use. If that is the case then you will be in the unfortunate position of having to re-choose. It happens sometimes.  Often just removing or adding a letter will help without changing the gist of your original choice. After you have successfully picked a name you can use,  all you have to do is pay for it. This usually entails having a credit or debit card.  So be prepared.

Great information that I wish I had access too when I was choosing my first domain name 8 years ago Polly.

It would have cut down the time it took me to learn all the procedure required.

Anyone coming online and trying to start their first internet business will welcome your concise explanation on how to buy and chose their first domain name.

That is so true Polly, many website hosts are reasonably priced…but they don’t offer the training that WA does. So the question is do you just want to build a website…or do you want to build a successful website?
